This year, the Bay Area lost a host of singular restaurants.
For natives, the most emotional losses were likely the old-school ones that said goodbye, namely Joe’s of Westlake in Daly City and Joe’s Cable Car in the Excelsior. On New Year’s Eve, Chinatown stalwart Empress of China will say goodbye as well.
Then there were the neighborhood favorites, both older (U-Lee, Villa Romana, Four Seas, All-Star Donuts, Jodie’s) and newer (To Hyang, Burmese Kitchen, Red Devil Lounge, Chenery Park, Chez Papa).
Even Tante Marie’s Cooking School taught its last class after 35 years in the city.
More than a few critically acclaimed ventures were lost as well, led by ground-breaking Noe Valley restaurant Incanto, Loretta Keller’s stellar Coco500, Mission pioneer Woodward’s Garden, and Daniel Patterson’s Oakland venture Plum (now open as an extension of Plum Bar).
The Lexington Club is in its final lap.
And then there were the white-tablecloth fine dining representatives that were swept to the sands of time: The Fifth Floor and Fleur de Lys.
